A HOSPITAL laboratory had to be evacuated after 20 litres of highly-toxic chemicals were spilled.

Emergency services were dispatched to St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester, after formalin – a liquid version of formaldehyde used to preserve tissues – was spilled.

Four staff were checked over for any injuries, but fortunately were not hurt.

Five fire crews attended the incident at about 11.30am on Tuesday and mopped up the spillage using granules before leaving.
