THE number of people claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance (JSA) across the area is down by more than 162 claimants.

Data released from the Office of National Statistics continues to show an improvement in jobless total.

The figures, which cover the wider Portsmouth area, show fewer men were claiming the out of work benefit in July compared to the previous month.

Meanwhile the number of women claiming has gone up, with slight increases in Gosport and Havant.

In Chichester the overall number of people claiming JSA has fallen from 1,160 to 1,147.

The biggest change was in Portsmouth where the numbers continued to drop, from 4,527 to 4,405.

Havant’s claimants fell from 2,055 to 2,028,

In Gosport the figures improve from 1,370 to 1,357.

There is a smaller drop in East Hampshire of three to 870.

The only increase was in Fareham which is up 16 to 997, compared to June.
