FIREFIGHTERS’ ladders were needed for a different sort of task last night other than tackling fires.

A large sign at Debenhams in Palmerston Road had come loose and was in danger of falling on to pedestrians.

One fire engine from Southsea was called out to take down the sign at about 9.30pm yesterday.

Earlier in the evening cutting tools were used by firefighters to release a locked bike in Omega Street, Somerstown.
