Unsung hero Shaun is always happy to help elderly neighbours

Taking numerous trips to the shops, picking up prescriptions and doing odd jobs are duties kind-hearted Shaun Coughlan does every day.

But the 67-year-old, from Waterlooville, does not do them for himself – he cares for his elderly neighbours.

Shaun was nominated as a We Can Do It T-shirt winner for being an unsung hero in his community.

Not only does he help his elderly neighbours, who live in sheltered housing, he loves every minute of it.

He says: ‘I can’t do enough for them but it is great, I really love helping them.

‘They are so grateful for the smallest things and I am just chuffed that I can help.

‘They all have my phone number and all they have to do is call and tell me what they need doing. Sometimes, I have had to go to the shop 10 times a day.’

As well as picking up groceries and prescriptions, Shaun also orders in fish and chips once a week and holds bingo three nights a week.

He took those duties over from other people living in the sheltered accommodation.

‘For some of the fish and chip nights, I have had orders from 24 people,’ Shaun adds.

‘They all love the bingo as well and it gives them something to do.

‘Most of the people I help are in their 80s and 90s and don’t get out much so it’s nice we can do different things for them.’
