A fire that badly damaged an historic cottage forced the closure of a Havant road today.

Barton’s Road was blocked off between the junctions with Wakeford’s Way and Eastleigh Road as firefighters tackled the blaze at Eastleigh Cottage.

The property is disused and the site has been approved for a new modern housing development

The buildings next door were formerly used as dog kennels

Local resident Richard Boryer 53 said: ‘It’s a shame - it’s a nice old cottage and must be nearly 100 years old. It was one of the last ones left in this area.’

A police car was today on site and the area was taped off

Four appliances and the specialist overhead ladder were called to the scene at 3.47am. Around 25 firefighters from Havant, Emsworth, Portchester, Cosham and Southsea were involved in tackling the fire.

Just before 7am, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the blaze had been brought under control. The road closure was then lifted.
