PARTS of a road in Gosport have been closed after a gas leak.

South Street has been closed in both directions between the A32 Mumby Road and Creek Road.

The leak, which started at around 6.30pm this evening, prompted police to close the road, with the fire service attending on standby.

Twelve people who live in flats above the shops in South Street have been evacuated.

Southern Gas Networks has brought in a digger to try to find where exactly the leak is and is digging up the area.

Work is continuing but if teh leak is not found soon residents may have to sleep elsewhere tonight.

Inspector Matt Cox, of Fareham and Gosport police, said: ‘We’re currently working with Southern Gas and Hampshire fire at a gas leak.

‘We want to ensure minimum risk to the public, everybody’s safety is paramount.’
