HUNDREDS of people flocked to Portsmouth’s former prison for an open day.

The now disused HMS Kingston Prison, on Milton Road, Fratton, opened its doors to give people in Portsmouth the chance to see behind the towering walls on Saturday.

More than 500 people successfully applied for tickets for the sold-out two-day event and were taken on one-hour tours around the prison by former guards.

Sisters Lucy and Rachael Tluszcz, aged 22 and 27 respectively, from Southsea, had a great time discovering the prison.

Lucy said: ‘I have always wondered what was behind the walls and now I know.

‘I was amazed at how spacious the grounds were when the cells seemed so small.’

Rachael agreed and added she would like to see inside more prisons to compare them to Kingston Prison.
