Waddock wowed by Fratton bearpit

Have your say

GARY WADDOCK believes the return of the Fratton Park bearpit can continue Pompey’s flying form.

The Blues assistant manager is certain a raucous second-half atmosphere was a major factor in Tuesday’s comeback win over Tranmere Rovers.

Pompey were propelled forward by the home crowd after Craig Westcarr’s 76th-minute goal sparked the 3-2 win.

Waddock was bowled over by the growing level of noise as Tranmere disintegrated.

He has no doubt that was the best atmosphere he’s witnessed since he arrived at the club in December.

And Waddock believes more of the same against Oxford will be a factor in Pompey continuing a six-game unbeaten run.

He said: ‘Tuesday night was amazing – the noise they created.

‘You could see the momentum was with us and they kept dropping deeper and deeper.

‘The crowd was getting louder and louder and that played a part in it.

‘We scored and the timing of it gave us 14 minutes to get the goals back.

‘When it went in the volume went up a touch and then it went up again with the second.

‘When the third went in there was a wow factor. It was brilliant. Incredible. Long may it continue.

‘It was the best atmosphere I’ve seen in the short period I’ve been here.

‘If we can hear that a few more times we’ll be doing something right – and so will the fans.’

Waddock explained seeing a crowd of 17,558 against AFC Wimbledon on Boxing Day provided him with another moment of realisation.

‘I looked around and there were over 17,000 people there in League Two on Boxing Day,’ he said.

‘That is a big factor for us at this level.’
