Water warning as blue green algae detected in Havant

The Environment Agency carried out the tests on behalf of Havant Borough Council, and found a bloom of cyanobacteria – commonly known as blue green algae – which can be found in freshwater lakes, streams and ponds. They produce toxins that affect people, livestock and pets that swim in and drink from the algae-contaminated water. Blue green algae is naturally occurring usually during periods of calm, warm weather. Residents are advised to be cautious, avoid contact with water with a blue-green appearance or a ‘pea soup’ like colour.
