Met Office issues yellow weather warning as Storm Diana batters PortsmouthÂ

Gusts are set to hit over 50mph today (November 29) as Storm Diana hits the region for a second day, and it is expected to cause travel delays and potentially more power cuts. 

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warn for wind for the Portsmouth area, it is in place from 3am today until 2pm this afternoon. 

Portsmouth had previously expected to be outside the warning zone and escape the worst of the storm but the forecast has now been changed. 

On its website the Met Office said: '˜A weather system will move northeastwards across the UK on Thursday bringing widespread strong winds.

'˜Inland gusts of 50 mph are likely with gusts of around 65 mph in exposed locations around Wales and western England.

'˜There remains a very small chance that this system will intensify as it moves northeastwards bringing even stronger winds to southwest England, Wales and on into northern England and southeast Scotland.

'˜If this occurs, gusts of 70-80 mph could be seen, mainly in exposed locations. In either case, winds will moderate by late morning across western England and Wales, then by mid afternoon across northern England and southeast Scotland.

'˜Heavy rain is also likely to affect southern and western England as well as Wales, and following on from recent wet weather this may lead to some very localised surface water flooding.' 

Here is what to expect as Storm Diana batters Portsmouth: 

- Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely with some journeys taking longer. There is the chance of some cancellations as well as some road/bridge closures.

- Some short term loss of power and other services is possible

- It's likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities affected by spray and/or large waves with a small chance of injuries from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.
