Is Portsmouth set for its coldest night of the year so far tonight?

Parts of southern England could shiver through temperatures well below freezing tonight, forecasters have predicted.

With winter settling in the Met Office is predicting temperatures of zero degrees in Portsmouth, although with the wind chill factor it is likely to feel several degrees colder.

A spokeswoman said clear skies will contribute to the cold weather overnight in the south of England.

Temperatures as low as -7C are expected in the Midlands, while London could see as low as -2C on the thermometer.

It would make it the coldest night of the year so far nationally.

The chilly conditions are expected to last into Wednesday morning and through the rest of the week.

Forecasters are predicting clear skies for Portsmouth over the next couple of days, but with temperatures still be below freezing at times.

And although they said that snow in some northern parts of the UK may be likely at the start of December, the chances of a white blanket falling over Portsmouth are slim.
