The scaffolding was deemed unsafe in today’s weather which has seen winds of over 60mp/h batter the area.

Headteacher Grahame Sammons said students in Years 7, 8 and 9 were sent home, while classes for Year 10 and 11 students continued as normal.

Mr Sammons said a scaffolding firm was working to secure the structure, which was put in place for repairs to the roof of a school building.

He said: ‘We noticed through the morning that the scaffolding that we have got in place to support the repair was looking unstable. With the wind being what it is that instability has gotten worse.’

Mr Sammons said children in Years 7 to 9 were still able to stay at the school for supervised study if they were unable to go home early.

He said he hoped the entire school would be open as usual tomorrow.

Mr Sammons said: ‘I’m reasonably confident that we will reopen tomorrow but as always I will be guided by what’s safe and what’s not.’
