On its website the Met Office said: ‘A small area of rain is moving eastwards, falling onto cold surfaces following earlier clear conditions.

‘Some icy stretches may form as the rain falls or under clearer skies as the rain clears.’

It added: ‘There is potential for slippery surfaces and difficult driving conditions.’

Gritters are being sent out on Hampshire’s roads this weekend as temperatures drop.

Southern Rail services are also being disrupted this morning because of ice covering the rails.

Trains are having to run at reduced speeds on some routes, including between Horsham and Havant.
