John Izod of Long Drive, Rowner, and his wife Constance, pictured toasting to her reconnected water supply, had enormous problems for the seven days they had to collect all their water from a standpipe.

‘My wife, Constance, is blind and has only recently come out of hospital after an operation,’ said Mr Izod.

‘I have to bathe her a couple of times per day, as well as washing all her bed linen and clothes.

‘It was hard work without water in the house, but I was quite prepared to carry on until the water strike was over.’
