THIS WEEK IN 1984: Building society said it '˜may quit' the city
Portsmouth Building Society warned that it could quit the city if residents won a fight against its expansion plans.
The general manager of the London Road society, Jeffrey Allard, said more office space was desperately needed for the fast-growing organisation which was ‘bursting at the seams.’
If, on February 29, city planners rejected the outlined scheme, Mr Allard warned that the society, and ‘all the jobs connected with it,’ would have to move out.
About 200 people signed a petition opposing proposals to extend the existing offices at ground and first floor levels.
