THIS WEEK IN 1989: Injured man picked up as a drunkard

A Portsmouth man suffering from a head injury from which he subsequently died, was picked up by police for being '˜drunk,' a manslaughter trial jury at Winchester Crown Court was told.

The man, a self-employed builder, aged 50, was stopped by police 90 minutes after being released from Queen Alexandra Hospital. He had suffered from brain damage and died 16 days later.

Another man appeared before the court – alleged to have punched the deceased on the jawline.
