PORTSMOUTH City Council leader Gerald Vernon-Jackson has insisted that rubbish collections will remain weekly.

The Lib Dem group said there were no plans to save money by reducing collections.

Councillor Eleanor Scott, who’s in charge of rubbish collection, said: ‘Residents have told us that they value weekly collections.

‘It’s a basic right to expect rubbish to be collected regularly, and we’re pleased to continue this service which many other councils don’t provide.

‘We also want to encourage more people to recycle, and although we have over 85 per cent of our residents recycling we’d like to see this increase.’
