FIREFIGHTERS were called out after a small fire broke out on HMS Illustrious yesterday afternoon.

Engineers were welding in one of the aircraft carrier’s compartments at 1.55pm when a piece of melted plastic dropped onto cables and started a fire.

The flames were put out by engineers on the ship moments before firefighters arrived. Fire crews carried out an inspection before leaving shortly.

The ship is docked at Portsmouth Dockyard for refit work.

A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said: ‘The fire was already out upon arrival.’
