MORE retained firefighters are needed in West Sussex.

Officials say retained firefighters are the backbone of the service and man 14 out of 25 of the county’s fire stations.

Rob Baker-Johnson, a retained liaison officer at West Sussex Fire and Rescue service, said: ‘Retained firefighters are ordinary men and women who do an extraordinary job for the fire and rescue service and are integral to keeping their local fire station crewed. We are now looking for new retained firefighters to join our retained teams at fire stations across West Sussex.

‘We welcome applications from all sections of the community.
