The pub, in Auckland Road, Southsea, was named in honour of Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington, whose home, Apsley House, at Hyde Park Corner, was known as No.1 London.

The painting on the exterior of the pub depicts an image of Apsley House, with the wording ‘No.1 Portsmouth’ beneath.
