Where do I hang the washing now?

This is a photo taken from The Evening News in 1941 of a Portsmouth garden after a bomb had landed in it.

Close by is an Anderson shelter that could have taken a direct but for the sake of a few yards.

The family’s name and address was left out of the paper, perhaps for security reasons.

The woman, her husband, son and nephew plus the family dog survived.

When asked by The Evening News reporter what her feelings were after near-devastation of her family home, she simply replied: ‘Oh my, I do not know when I shall get the house clean and where will I hang the washing?’

If anyone recognises any of the family I would like to hear from them.
