The Friends of Leesland Park group has launched a campaign to get an outdoor gym built in the Whitworth Close park.

The group has applied for funding from the Aviva Community Fund, and is appealing for residents to cast their votes for the scheme.

It comes after the group identified a number of studies, pointing to a direct benefit to doing exercise in green spaces, as well as the social side of exercising together.

Philip Sandall from the Friends of Leesland Park said: '˜The gym would have eight pieces of fitness equipment, providing up to 14 workout stations that will give free and easy access to all.

'˜Gosport has been identified as one of England's fattest towns and our project would provide the chance to do free and enjoyable exercise in a pleasant green space.

'˜The grant would be added to the money already raised by the group and allow us to get supply quotes, knowing we have the funds for it.'
