Why is this strange pub name away with the lads?

Milton was, and to some elderly residents still is, called '˜the village'.

I wonder though, what the reason was for naming the pub pictured here as The Lads of the Village?

It stood in Somers Road, one of the longest in Portsmouth at the time before before Winston Churchill Avenue cut it in half.

It stood on the corner of Lower Forbury Road and was part of Blake’s Brewery, Gosport, before being purchased by Brickwoods to add to its large portfolio in 1935.

It was demolished many years ago, but I wonder if there is anyone around who might remember it?
