WORK to fix a hole in a busy road is expected to go into next week.
The metre-long hole appeared on the westbound carriageway of the A27, in Southampton Road, Titchfield on August 26.
Many believed it was a sinkhole, but Fareham council leader Sean Woodward said investigations had revealed it was caused by ageing pipework installed in the 1970s as part of an A27 improvement scheme.
Pumps have been put in place to get water out of the hole.
The hole has been temporarily supported and the remaining A27 lane protected with concrete barriers.
Cllr Woodward said: ‘Clearly it is critical that these repairs are properly and comprehensively carried out to keep Hampshire moving. I ask that people bear with us while the works are completed.’
