AROUND 40 trade unionists gathered at the Workers’ Memorial in Victoria Park to observe a minute’s silence.

Union members got together at noon yesterday to mark Workers’ Memorial Day. Asbestos deaths in Portsmouth and increased mental health problems due to excessive workloads and bullying were highlighted by speakers.

International aspects of health and safety such as the Bangladesh factory disaster a year ago and the construction deaths in preparation for the World Cup in Qatar were also raised.

The message was of the event was to ‘remember the dead, but fight for the living’.
