ENSURING their village is clean and tidy, the Flame Youth Group wants to be proud of its surroundings.
The group of youngsters won the Care of the Environment category at this year’s We Can Do It awards.
They came out on top against some other great nominations including runner-up Clare Seek who helped children plant trees and bulbs in Wimbledon Park, in Southsea.
The Flame Youth Group, made up of young people aged 11 to 15, volunteered their time by going on a litter pick in Stubbington. Mike Terry accepted the award on behalf of his wife Carolyn who runs the group.
He said: ‘We were totally shocked when we won. We couldn’t believe it.
‘But it is great that the hard work of the young people has been recognised.
‘The group still talk about it now and I think it had an influence on them.’
Son Daniel added: ‘It was a great day and it taught us how important it is to look after our own community.
‘We still talk about it now because it was a fun day and was such a good cause.’
