FIREFIGHTERS were called to a children’s playpark after youths were found setting fire to bits of timber in the sandpit.

An early morning dog-walker came across the incident in the adventure playground in Stamshaw Recreation Ground, off Strode Road, Tipner, at 5am on Sunday.

The dog-walker called police who alerted the fire service.

Crews from Cosham were called out, but when they arrived the youths had disappeared.

The firefighters put out the bonfire and made the scene safe, conscious of the fact that young children play in the sand pits where it had been.

No police were in attendance.

It is unknown where the timber that was set alight was found.
