Along with a crew from Petersfield Fire Station, the team had to go underwater to push the car out.

A spokesman from Cosham Fire Station said: ‘The car was stuck and they had been there for quite some time and it was cold.

‘It was safer for our crew to put dry suits on and go underwater to push the car out, than to get the family out the car first.

‘As they had tried to drive under the bridge the water was too deep and if affected the car’s electrics and it cut out, so that’s why they were stuck.’

Crews were called at 6.24pm to the incident in Horndean.
