PASSENGERS at a railway station are set to be left out in the cold until the new year while work is carried out on waiting rooms.

And the toilets will also be closed while Fareham railway station gets a £1m facelift by South West Trains.

I do not understand why they have decided to carry out these works when passengers are going to be looking to wait inside as it’s going to get colder and colder

The station was closed last month to allow Network Rail to replace nine sets of points along the line but since reopening, passengers at the station have not been able to use its waiting rooms and passenger toilets as they carry out upgrade works.

South West Trains says the closure will be likely in place until the end of the year, which has angered passenger Madeline Close.

She said: ‘I do not understand why they have decided to carry out these works when passengers are going to be looking to wait inside as it’s going to get colder and colder.

‘They are closed at the most inconvenient time for passengers.

Ms Close, of North Wallington, Fareham, said the works should have been carried out over the summer so passengers are not left outside in the cold by the platform.

‘If they are going to close them, then why not do it when it is at least warm outside?’ she added.

The work at the station, besides the upgrades to the toilets, includes the creation of a new staircase that will have double-height handrails, a cycle channel and anti-slip treads, new zebra crossings and pedestrian access routes.

There will be more spaces for motorcycles to park and better lighting and signs throughout the station.

A spokesman for South West Trains said: ‘In order to carry out these works safely and in the quickest possible time, the waiting rooms and toilets are currently closed to passengers.

‘We expect them both to reopen by the end of next month and we are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to passengers while we carry out these improvements.’
