FIREFIGHTERS spent nearly four hours battling a fire after 1,200 tons of manure caught fire on Sunday.

Two appliances from Wickham and Fareham tackled the flames in Hoe Street, Hoe Gate, near Wickham, after receiving the call at 6.39pm.

Using three hoses they managed to damp down the fire, leaving the scene at about 10pm.

The firefighters had also used farm machinery during the incident in an attempt to damp down the flames and nearby animals were moved to a safe place.
