Barber who cuts hair of Portsmouth’s rough sleepers recognised with award

A BARBER with a keen eye for style has been recognised by The News for his work putting a smile on the faces of homeless people across the city.

Andrei Budai is the man behind Silky Smooth Barbers in Southsea, who on Monday was announced as the winner of the We Can Do It awards’ Service with a Smile category.

The barber has been cutting the hair of rough sleepers across Portsmouth, free of charge, as his way of giving back to the community.

He believes that a fresh trim can give a homeless person the boost in confidence that they need to turn their lives around.

Andrei said: ‘I really didn’t expect to win this award, everyone nominated for the We Can Do It awards has done something amazing.

‘The project started out a while ago – I just wanted to do something for the homeless people in the city.

‘It is amazing how a haircut can have such an impact on a rough sleeper; it’s a nice boost to their confidence.

‘You never know how one nice thing can impact someone’s life.’

Andrei says that there are lots of people helping rough sleepers in Portsmouth – but they could always use some extra pairs of hands.

He explained: ‘There are so many people doing all this work for homeless people across the city.

‘I think if everyone was able to do something then we could make a huge difference for homeless people in Portsmouth.’
