A CAR crashed into the wall of a Southsea nursery damaging it and leaving a section of the garden closed off.

In the early hours of the morning a Vauxhall Astra crashed into the wall outside Rainbow Corner Day Nursery at Victoria Road North.

Police said at 4.43am it also knocked down a bus stop sign and that nobody was inside the car when officers arrived.

Owner Lucy Whitehead said the vehicle was removed swiftly and luckily the incident hasn’t affected the building or the nursery’s ability to operate as usual.

She said: ‘As far as I’m aware the driver did flee before police arrived.

‘We opened as normal this morning because the incident was dealt with before we got here.

‘No-one was hurt, it's just an inconvenience more than anything.

‘There is damage to the wall and a section of the garden is closed off.

‘Staff acted quickly and risk-assessed the area and parents were told by 7am what had happened.’

Police enquiries are ongoing.
