DRIVERS have been caught out using their mobile phones on the first day tough new penalties came into force.

Today marked the first day of motorists facing a £200 fine and six points on their licence if caught out on their phone – double the previous punishments.

Hampshire roads police posted information about a number of incidents on their Twitter account.

They stopped three people on the A32 in Fareham in 30 minutes for using their phones at the wheel - despite all being aware of the new laws.

And another driver was clocked behind the wheel using their phone to select songs to practice singing to, claiming they didn’t realise it was an offence.

Figures show since 2014 there have been 56 crashes linked with mobile phone use, resulting in 73 injuries and four people dead.
