A MAJOR road into Portsmouth will be closed over the weekend while work on a bridge is carried out.

The southbound carriageway of Eastern Road will be closed from 9pm tomorrow until 6am on Saturday. One lane will then open before closing again at 4pm on Saturday and remaining shut until 5am on Monday.

The closure is between Anchorage Park and the Eastern Road roundabout. The northbound carriageway will be reduced to one lane during the same periods and in the same area.

Major delays were caused in Portsmouth last weekend as the northbound carriageway was shut all weekend.

Colas is carrying out work on the water bridge on behalf of Portsmouth City Council.

A spokeswoman said: ‘It is essential that this work is carried out to ensure the bridge remains structurally sound.’
