THE number of Christmas lights being put up by the council across Portsmouth is on the up this year.

Seasonal sparkle will be added to Allaway Avenue, Havant Road, Tangier Road, Fawcett Road, Winter Road and Copnor Road – adding to the ones that are in Southsea, the city centre and Cosham.

It is hoped that this move, along with free parking in Cosham, North End, Southsea and the city centre on Saturday, December 1, will give people an incentive to support the small businesses throughout the city.

Councillor Ben Dowling, cabinet member for planning, regeneration and economic development, said: ‘These streets are home to many independent shops, and we know that the Christmas trading period is crucial for them.

‘We hope the addition of the lights in these areas will help to increase footfall, boost their trade and also spread some festive cheer across the city.’

On Saturday, special events in Castle Road and Albert Road, as well as a more frequent Park and Ride service, will also give small businesses a push.

Free parking will be available in the following places: London Road car park, Cosham; Wootton Street car park, Cosham; Stubbington Avenue car park, North End; Ashby Place car park, Southsea; Clarence Street car park in the city centre.
