A NATIONAL maritime charity has welcomed the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth to its head office for the first time since his appointment as ex-officio Vice-President of the charity.

Councillor Lee Mason visited the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society in Chichester and met with the Society’s chief executive, Captain Justin Osmond RN, as well as staff, enabling him to be briefed on the Society’s history.

Founded in 1839, the society’s purpose is to provide financial help to merchant seafarers, fishermen and their dependants, who are suffering hardship or distress.

Cllr Mason said: ‘It has been extremely enjoyable to visit Chichester to meet the Society’s staff and volunteers and further understand the history and ongoing activity of the charity.

‘Following this visit I am excited for what the future holds, and I sincerely look forward to playing a part in it.’
