SHOPPERS cutting back on plastic bags have raised £172,000 for charity.

The Southern Co-operative is donating the cash to good causes after seeing a 71 per cent drop in plastic bag use.

It comes after the government introduced a 5p levy on single-use bags in shops and supermarkets in October.

Cash will go to the The Wildlife Trust Hampshire and a community initiative, Love Your Neighbourhood.

In future good causes will apply to the scheme to get cash raised through bag sales.
