ENGINEERS battling to restore Portsmouth’s power have vowed to have all the city’s lights back on by midnight.
Scottish and Southern Electric has said in a statement on Twitter it is ‘aiming to have everyone restored by midnight’ following tonight’s blackout.
However, homes in parts of the city are already reporting having power – including in parts of Southsea and the northern areas of Portsmouth.
The outage swept through the city and surrounding areas shortly before 9pm, plummeting thousands of homes into darkness for up to 30 minutes.
Unconfirmed reports from witnesses claimed to have a seen a bright blue ‘flash’ in Purbrook moments before the power was lost.
Dave Hartley said: ‘Walking outside around Purbrook and saw a huge flash of blue light behind houses for a few seconds.’
Another witness added: ‘There was a huge blue flash and then the power all went out.’
SSE has not yet commented on the exact cause of the outage but said in an earlier tweet that ‘main network fault’ was to blame.
Residents also reported having issues with their 4G mobile phone signal during the outage. However, it is unsure if this is linked to the outage.
