While notice boards along Southsea beach frequently showed the water had been tested and found safe, the resort was still branded as having no clean beach.
Southsea’s name failed to appear as the Tidy Britain Group revealed a list of places awarded a blue flag – a reward recognised Europe-wide as signifying a clean beach.
The nearest to Portsmouth were on Hayling Island and at West Wittering.
A poll revealed 80 per cent of holidaymakers prefered to visit blue flag beaches.
But Peter Montague, a Southsea parish councillor said having a blue flag was not the ‘be all and end all’ of a good resort.
