A CAR has been totally destroyed following a fire that started in the vehicle’s engine in the early hours of the morning.

Firefighters were called to Shaftesbury Avenue in Purbrook, Waterlooville, just before 4am today.

A driver and passenger had been in the Peugeot 307 at the time the blaze started, but managed to get themselves out when it did, before dialling 999.

A spokesman from Cosham Fire Station said: ‘Two of our firefighters used breathing apparatus and one hose reel yet to extinguish the fire.

‘The car was totally gutted.’

Firefighters then worked to make the scene safe.
