The firm was fined £75,000 in September 2015 but did not pay. It was wound up in December 2016 and now the director has been banned.

David Brooks, chief investigator at the Insolvency Service, said: ‘This is a serious case where the actions of the director and the company have caused distress to members of the public in contravention of UK and EC regulations.

‘This ban reflects the seriousness of these actions and the robust stance that the Insolvency Service will take against those whose conduct falls below accepted commercial standards.’

The problem dates back to December 2013 when the Information Commissioner’s Office told CCEL it received complaints from subscribers to TPS, who did not consent to receive calls from the firm.

The firm said, in January 2014, it had bought the data from a third party and not screened out people on the TPS register.

The ICO monitored the firm for three months. But in August 2014 more complaints were received despite an initial improvement.

Complaints were made between June 14, 2013, and March 31, 2015.
