HAYLING Island is expecting the largest gathering of water sports fanatics in the country this weekend.

The National Watersports Festival begins today and includes competitions for all ages and abilities, professionals displaying their skills, and exhibitions of the most up to date water sports equipment.

It starts at 10am and finishes Sunday evening.

All events are based close to the Inn on the Beach pub, on Hayling sea front.

More than 7,000 spectators are expected to watch the competitors, with some taking to the water for the first time.

World-famous professionals will be there and there are taster sessions on offer. Beach parties with live music are happening on Friday and Saturday.

On Saturday there will be a night water sports event where professionals race or perform stunts under the floodlights.

Beachside, spectators can try out water walkers and try out different food.

The winners of the competition Stand by your Van, which celebrates customising watersports fans’ vehicles, will be announced tomorrow night too.
