How do cars work in Fortnite?

The new driveable cars allow players to move around Fortnite's expansive map much faster than before, and now the flood levels introduced at the beginning of Season 3 have subsided, there's much more dry land to explore.

"Get behind the wheel of the first driveable cars in Fortnite!" says developer Epic Games. "As long as the car isn't booted, the keys are already in the ignition."

This means that if you find yourself coming across one of the map's cars during a match, you'll be able to simply walk up to it, press a button and hop in for yourself.

Like in the real world, it appears as if the cars will need regular refuelling.

Gas pumps are also being introduced to the game within the update, where you'll be able to stop off to top up your tank.

If you can't find yourself a pump though, there are also throwable Gas Cans scattered around the Island.

These can be transported with you for on-the-go refuelling, and once they're dry, you'll also be able to fill them up again at a Gas Pump.

What are the cars like?

Epic has shown off the first batch of cars coming to the game, and there's a nice variety in the type of vehicles you'll be able to find.

The Islander Prevalent appears to be your standard five-door saloon car, while the sleek design of the Victory Motors Whiplash hints at something much speedier.

The OG Bear takes on more of a truck form - and will likely be able to navigate steeper climbs and harsher off-road terrain - and the Titano Mudflap is the biggest 'car', a full-on truck cab that seems perfect for long-haul journeys.

What else is new?

Alongside the new cars, all-new radio stations have been introduced to the game, letting you blast some tunes on a channel that best fits your vibe.

How do I update the game?

Many gamers have their consoles set to install game updates automatically, so if you’re just now booting up your machine, it could be that you don’t need to do anything at all to jump into the latest version of Fortnite.

But for those who need to update manually, here’s a quick guide:

On Xbox One, press the Home button on your controller and select Games & Apps. From there, select Updates, and you should see a Fortnite tile appear. Select it, press the Menu button, and select Update.

PlayStation 4 players need to highlight Fortnite in the console’s main menu, press the Options button on your controller, and press Check For Updates. If there is an update, the game update will be put into your download queue and once completed, you will be informed by an on-screen message.

Nintendo Switch users should ensure their console is connected to the Internet, and from the HOME Menu, select the icon for the software you wish to update without starting the game or application. Press the + or - Button on your controller, then select Software Update followed by Via the Internet.

Of course, with Fortnite release patches and updates on a weekly basis, it’s highly advised you set up automatic updates on your console of choice, to streamline your experience.
