There may still be months to go until the big day but retailers are already thinking about the festive season.

John Lewis have revealed their must-have toys for Christmas 2018, and with parents keen to get their little ones away from smartphones and tablets, the department store predicts that this Christmas will all be about toys designed to get kids mobile.

“We’re seeing growing demand for toys which encourage kids to get active,” said Harry Boughton,  toy buyer for the company.

“Parents are telling us that they want to buy toys which encourage their children to spend less time looking at a screen, and more time playing games that get them moving.”

Well known brands

The top 10 list includes some well known toy brands, too.

There are products from the likes of LEGO and Nerf (which include LEGO Technics and DUPLO sets and the Nerf Laser Alpha) alongside more traditional toys like scooters and mini kitchens.

Top of the list

In the top spot is a modern take on the traditional spinning top known as the I-Top, which John Lewis predicts is going to be one of the biggest sellers this Christmas.

Learning while playing

There are also toys designed to get kids thinking during the scool holidays, such as the Tech Will Save Us Coder Kit and the GraviTrax science kit, which teaches children about magnetics and gravity.

“Miniature home products continue to trend,” said Boughton.

“So for parents and family members looking to encourage creativity and role play, we’ve created a Waitrose supermarket and mini wooden kitchen where little ones can pick up ‘ingredients’ before rustling up a delicious imaginary meal in their play kitchen.”
