There were no fences or railings to keep children from playing in the ruined houses, and the pavement was littered with debris from demolitions.

But, there were still people living in some of the houses waiting to be rehoused.

Residents spoke of lack of coordination between gas and electricity services.

As houses were pulled down some occupied ones were left without light or heat until protests brought workmen in to restore the services.
