THIS WEEK IN 1971: The echo of grand days and ways

Two thousand pigeons soared into the sky at Chichester to mark the official start of the Chichester Show, which for the first time, was held over two days.Â

During the event, an estimated crowd of 22,000 went through the gates to see some of the country's top horse riders compete at the 16-acre Graylingwell Hospital site.

Among guests at the show were the mayor and mayoress of Chichester, and Douglas Bunn, who owned the Hickstead  showjumping course.

Mr Checketts, the show's chairman, said: '˜The two-day affair has worked well.'

Profits went to the Friends of Chichester Hospitals.

The event the year before raised £1,400 and in 1971, they hoped to do much better.
