THIS WEEK IN 1971: The land from Portsmouth Harbour

Reclamation of the land at the northern end of Portsmouth Harbour was captured by a News photographer.

On the right was the conveyer belt carrying chalk from Portsdown Hill, and top left is what would become Hilsea roundabout. Great strides had been made in the spring of 1971 in the reclamation of land for the South Coast Motorway and the new IBM headquarters building for Great Britain. Dredging for the road within the area was virtually completed, and the laying of the chalk bund along the extension route was well advanced. Work continued at speed until it was completed in the late 1970s.Â
