THIS WEEK IN 1972: Jumbos go to the little wedding

They say elephants never forget. For Wumba (10) and Dippy (12), the day was certainly one to remember.Â

For they went to church for the wedding of two dwarfs.

It was the day, at St Jude's Church, Southsea, that Arthur Dean (21) and Penny Wheeler (16) of Cheltenham got married.

The couple were both from the Italian circus Enis Togni, that was on Southsea Common.

Before the bride and groom came out of the church, Wumba and Dippy enjoyed themselves eating sugar lumps provided by a thoughtful News reporter and chewing the leaves overhanging the walls outside the church.

Members of the circus supported the couple on their big day and watched as they were slowly whisked to the common by the two jumbos.
