THIS WEEK IN 1972: Princess Anne and Goodwill robbed of victory at Goodwood

Riding Goodwill, a promising novice owned by the Queen, she came out at the top of the dressage section and was in a strong winning position after a clear round in the showjumping.

Then Goodwill refused the fifth jump, but went on immediately to take the sixth which was right next to it. 

Princess Anne took him round again to take the fifth '“ and then re-jumped the sixth which earned an unlucky disqualification. 

She went on in strong form to complete the rest of the 20 jumps in the mile-and-a-half-course.

She flew through the tricky and dangerously steep Devil's Ditch with superb confidence, winning the applause of the crowd and the admiration or other riders whose horses refused or faltered at the double jump. 

The overall winner was Helen Lawson, from South Warnborough, Hampshire.

She rode her own horse, Omidian, to win the Silver Salver presented by Shippams of Chichester. 

Four years later, Princess Anne rode Goodwill at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.
