THIS WEEK IN 1973: City lies doggo over new canine order

The much heralded Portsmouth Control of Dogs Order went into effect '“ and went off like a confused damp squib.Â

The city council wanted to keep strays off the city's streets and appointed a dog warden at a salary of £1,554, the equivalent to £18,253.63 in 2018.

Despite this impressive salary, the council refused to reveal if the order had been put in place.

The RSPCA, working in conjunction with the city council, said it thought the order should have been introduced many years previously. 

A spokesperson for Portsea Island police said: '˜We knew the new order had taken effect.

'˜Next week we will discuss tactics with the new dog warden to get rid of the strays.'

Meanwhile, the city's strays continued to wander the streets of Portsmouth for days...
